- I flew to Houston to hang out with my really close friend Caroline. We decided to meet up there to check out some art stuff- Rothko Chapel, Menil Gallery, a Kusama installation, and the Turrell Skyspace, amongst other things. Flying back to the US, and in particular, Texas was pretty surreal. I flew from Nairobi, via Istanbul. Upon arrival, my Uber driver in Houston had a Bible on the dashboard and was openly carrying a handgun. It made me, and continues to make me, wonder what makes a place “home…” and where my “tribe” is. I’m pretty sure nationality and ethnicity has nothing to do with it.
- The food and booze scene in Houston seems to be pretty good these days. The Montrose area made a big impression. I like it there. A big chunk of traveling for me is about the food… and it’s nice to be able to do that with someone else who’s on the same page.
- The Houston Space Center is awesome. The historical and scientific uniqueness and significance of this place and the things happening here probably can’t be understated- it’s one of the highlights of my trip. The most incredible thing to me, was to see mission control for the Apollo missions. You get to just… go see it… completely unchanged from when it was operational. You sit in the same seats, in the same observation room that has been completely unaltered… totally surreal. That and seeing the Saturn V is pretty breathtaking.
