July 26-31, Budapest

***updated

  • I went to Budapest to participate in a conference with people involved in a non-profit group that does the post-modern faith community stuff I’ve been exploring. It also happened that the speaker is a theologian and a pastor at a church I used to attend in MN. It’s interesting… the guy from London and the guy from MN really don’t agree on stuff at all, but it was interesting to listen into the discussion. There were people from all over the world… all involved in some pretty interesting stuff. Drank a lot of whisky and smoked a lot of cigars…
  • I met a guy who was a really influential TV producer. A guy who wrote and produced some of the most influential TV shows ever. You would never have guessed it… he’s just a really low-key guy. I spent one evening picking his brain about the power of narrative, and what makes for a good story… and the role of stories in communities and society more broadly. It’s strange to me- you think about it, throughout history, some of the most powerful and influential people have always been the storytellers. It’s just that over time, the media (literally) has changed… and at this point, participation and interaction (and as a result the power dynamic) has changed too.
  • Second time in Budapest. I really, really like this city. I do think it’s slightly better during the summer.
