There are some special things happening in Glasgow… I think, beautiful and heroic things…
***updated
- I spent more time visiting some of the “churches” here. I’m convinced, more now than ever, that organized religion is a bad, bad, thing; however, I’m equally convinced about the importance of community, faith, and service. I don’t think we can be happy or whole people without those things. A lot of the shit I think we experience as “church” are historical and cultural artifacts with little or no current relevance. An analogy would be sort of like the Scandinavian folks who still eat lutefisk in MN… long after the invention of refrigerators and freezers. Anyway… it’s interesting to see all the church buildings for sale by the Church of Scotland. One of my favorite bars and venues in Glasgow is an old church- St. Luke’s. Their logo is of St. Luke as a DJ… It’s emblematic of the cultural shifts that are happening- stuff that’s mostly done happening in western Europe, but we’re on the cusp of seeing happen in the US- at least according to RP Jones – in what I think is an outstanding piece of work called “The End of White Christian America.“
- A friend invited me to join a trip to Loch Ness, with a bunch of American exchange students. It’s kind of overrated… I’m a little baffled about the whole monster thing and how that took off. That being said- the rest of the drive was beautiful. Also got some serious Scottish breakfast and saw some local wildlife. So Scottish highland cattle are the guys from the “emo cow” meme. And the red deer there really like “biscuits.”
- Went to the Glasgow gallery of modern art. Pretty good, and free. Also- saw the statue of the Duke of Wellington, with the traffic cone on his head… which was, and is still apparently a thing.
