May 2-6, Prague

I went to Prague for a bit. That wasn’t part of my plans. It’s kind of an unexpected plot twist; and a good one for many reasons, not the least of which is because I didn’t have to pay for my flight there.

I like that city- it’s a beautiful place. It’s my second time there, so there’s less pressure to see and do stuff… you can just be there and appreciate different, more subtle things.

This particular visit to Prague was meaningful in unexpected ways. It’s been interesting to reassess things in my life in terms of narrative. On the one hand, there are things that I’m in control of… like how I respond to circumstances. It’s the stuff of… character development… I’m in charge of the character development part of the story so to speak. On the other hand, there are a lot of other things I’m not in control of- specifically circumstances and other people. How the plot plays out… is the product of the interactions between these two elements… so the outcome isn’t something you have direct control over per se. Some outcomes are good, some are bad… fair or unfair, wanted or unwanted, whatever. I guess the question is, what does the character (me) do, given a set of circumstances… that makes the difference between a hero or a villain… something courageous or something cowardly… kind or unkind, dignified or undignified…etc… (it’s not the outcomes that make the difference.)
