November 1, 2015, Pireaus and Athens

The cruise ship was berthed at the port of the city of Pireaus, which is now contiguous with Athens. My parents and I did a bus tour of the city. The tour group wasn’t up for walking up to the Acropolis of Athens, so I left the group and headed out on my own. It’s worth it to visit, but.. man… the tourists, and tourism industry… I’ll write more about it later, but I feel like tourism in places like Athens and Venice is a weird tragedy happening in slow motion.

Anyway, I saw a lot of cool old shit. It’s almost too much to document. There’s also something weird about seeing these places and things in person… it’s almost like you get there, and you’re surrounded by thousands or people taking the same pictures, and it becomes less special or something. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. The resultĀ is that I started trying to notice different things- stuff that weren’t the bajillionth picture of columns from Athens. (Of course, which I took pictures of, ’cause they’re fuckin’ majestic.) I’m not necessarily trying to be special, just trying to notice something that might get overlooked because everyone’s staring at the columns.

anyway…
