A friend warned me that I was going to get sick at the beginning of this trip. Apparently it’s part of the transition. He was right. I got sick. By the time I got to Urbino, I’m pretty sure I had a case of bronchitis. So I rested up in Urbino for 3 days. Thankfully, the place I stayed in was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed. I had an entire fully furnished home to myself for 3 days. Giovanni’s place, via airbnb again. It’s nestled in the hillside just below Urbino… down the road from the Benelli armory, for those of you who are firearms connoisseurs. After hitting the grocery store and pharmacy, I spent most of my time on the patio overlooking the abandoned railroad bridge, drinking tea. The featured image is of my socks and shirts drying on the patio. Hazy sunsets with layers of hills every evening. Stars every night. The neighbor’s rooster every morning. It’s a pretty charming life.
Giovanni’s a pretty interesting guy- professor, teaches o.chem at University of Urbino. Got his PhD from University of Bologna and Berkeley, did postdoc at MIT. 2 or 3 month old baby I think; wife didn’t speak much English, but hospitality and kindness doesn’t need much translation. They fed me the first night I was there ’cause I didn’t get to the grocery store in time. Super nice guy and family.
Highlights of Urbino are the Palazzo Ducale, another UNESCO world heritage site, and the home of Raphael, or more properly, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino.
It was just nice to rest, cook, do laundry, and sleep a lot. Good living.
